Site visit of MULTIPLHY 2.6 MW High temperature electrolyser in Rotterdam

On 23 January 2026, a site visit was organised to Neste's renewable products refinery in Rotterdam, to visit the 2.6 MW high temperature electrolyser, based on Sunfire solid oxide electrolysis technology. The other partners of the project, ENGIE, PAUL WURTH and CEA, were also present during the visit, as well as the project officer from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, who has followed and collaborated with the project since its beginning in 2020.

This electrolyser is the world's largest high temperature electrolyser installed in a real industrial environment. Many milestones have paved the way to a successful start-up including factory acceptance tests, site preparation, commissioning and start-up, complemented by laboratory-scale tests at stack level.

The project's success is a result of close collaboration among all partners, and the lessons learned will be valuable for the partners' future development and deployment of next-generation technologies.

MULTIPLHY project has received funding from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking (now Clean Hydrogen Partnership) under grant agreement No 875123. This Joint Undertaking receives support from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe Research.
